As a starting point, yes, and it genuinely saves time and waste in these estates. We still verify on site, because extensions and thirty years of individual alterations mean no two are truly identical any more, but we are checking a known layout rather than starting cold.

Why does the granite mark near the tap?

Borehole water here is hard, and unsealed granite absorbs the deposits. It is not a fault in the stone. Sealing at installation prevents it, and existing marks usually draw out with a poultice rather than scrubbing, which only pushes them deeper.

Repeating plans cut waste

Houses in Otiende and Southlands were built to a small number of plans. A worktop layout proven in one is a very good starting point for the next, which saves a survey visit and, more usefully, lets us plan the cutting to minimise waste.

We still verify on site. Extensions and decades of individual changes mean nothing is quite identical any more. But checking a known layout is faster and cheaper than starting from nothing.

Hard water

Borehole supply around Karen C and much of the surrounding stock leaves deposits, and on unsealed granite that becomes staining around the sink and tap within months.

Owners routinely conclude they were sold poor stone. They were sold unsealed stone. Sealing at installation prevents it entirely, and existing marks usually come out with a poultice: drawn out rather than scrubbed, because scrubbing pushes oil and mineral deeper into the surface.

Peninsulas from the same slab

The narrower kitchens here suit a peninsula rather than an island, and a peninsula top is small enough to come from the offcut of the main run.

Planned that way it costs very little and matches exactly. Ordered separately later it means a second slab and a possible colour difference, because no two granite slabs are the same.
