Marble Kitchen Tops Prices in Kenya: Priced by the Slab, for a Reason

Marble is priced per slab, and that is not a dodge

Granite and quartz can be sold by area because they are reasonably consistent. Marble is not. Veining varies between slabs from the same quarry and even the same block, so the price attaches to the individual piece rather than to a rate.

That means an honest marble quotation follows a yard visit. Anyone giving you a firm marble price over the phone is quoting an average that your slab may not match.

For reference, slab prices in Nairobi start around KES 7,500 for local stone and KES 10,500 for imported, with marble varying widely above that depending on the piece.

Before you spend anything: etching

Marble is calcium carbonate. Lemon, vinegar, wine, tomato and many cleaning products react with it and leave a dull mark. That is etching, and it is a change in the stone rather than dirt on it.

Sealing does not prevent it. Sealing reduces staining, which is a separate problem. This is the single most misrepresented thing in the Kenyan stone trade and it is why we put it on the price page rather than in small print.

Etching can be polished out. On a honed finish it is far less visible than on a polished one, which is why we recommend honed for any marble that will see a working kitchen.

Where the money is well spent

Bathroom vanities: little acid exposure, marble at its best, and a small area so the premium is manageable.

A pastry or baking area: a genuine functional use, cool and smooth.

Book-matched feature runs, two slabs cut so the veining mirrors across the seam. It costs more because the slabs must come from the same block in sequence, and it turns the joint from a compromise into the point of the installation.

Where it is usually regretted

A busy family kitchen worktop, chosen from a photograph, in a polished finish. It will mark, and the person who chose it will not have expected it to.

We fit marble for clients who want it and understand it. We would rather lose the job than fit it to someone who is going to be unhappy in six months.

What a worktop rate does not include

These are quoted separately and visibly rather than folded into a square-foot rate, because they are where two apparently similar quotations diverge.

  • Sink and hob cutouts, and any drainer grooves
  • Upstands and full-height splashbacks, priced by the running foot separately
  • Mitred or built-up edge profiles, which double the material at the edge
  • Removing and disposing of the existing worktop
  • Making good where units are not level: tops are templated after levelling, not before

Frequently asked questions

Why is marble quoted per slab rather than per square foot?
Because you are buying one specific piece of rock rather than a quantity of a product. Two slabs of the same marble differ in veining, and the price follows the individual piece. A per-square-foot rate for marble is at best an average and at worst meaningless.
Will sealing stop marble etching?
No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. Sealing reduces staining, dirt and oil soaking in. Etching is a chemical reaction between acid and the calcium carbonate in the stone, and it happens through a sealer. Honed marble hides it far better than polished.
Is marble a mistake in a Kenyan kitchen?
Not a mistake, but a decision that has to be made with open eyes. In a family kitchen handling citrus and tomato daily, marble will develop a patina. Some clients want exactly that. Others discover it after installation and are unhappy, which is what this page exists to prevent.
What is book-matching and does it cost more?
Cutting two adjacent slabs so the veining mirrors across the seam. On a run needing two slabs it turns a joint into a feature. It costs more because both slabs must come from the same block in sequence and the cutting has less tolerance, and it has to be decided at selection.

Send us the run lengths

Run lengths and depth in metres is enough for a rate. We will convert it to square feet, apply the band and give you a range, then take you to the yard to choose the actual slab.
