Granite Kitchen Tops Prices in Nairobi: Slab Yard to Fitted Worktop
Where the money actually goes
A granite kitchen top has two costs: the stone, and everything done to it.
The stone. Local slabs from around KES 7,500. Imported such as Black Galaxy from around KES 10,500.
The fabrication. Templating, cutting, edge profiling, sink and hob cutouts, drainer grooves, polishing, transport and installation. On a finished worktop this is usually the larger half.
Understanding that split explains most of the confusion in Nairobi countertop pricing, a quote that looks half the price of another is frequently a slab price sitting next to a fitted price.
Go to the yard
Granite is quarried rock, and it varies. Two slabs of the same named stone can differ in background tone, grain scale and the density of veining.
The photograph on a supplier’s website is one slab. Yours is a different one. We take clients to the yard to choose the actual piece their kitchen will be cut from, and on any stone with visible movement it is the difference between the kitchen you expected and one you did not.
Slab yield and waste
Slabs come in fixed sizes and worktops do not. A kitchen requiring 1.2 slabs is charged for 2 unless we can place the offcut somewhere useful: an island, a set of upstands, a vanity top in the same stone.
We plan that at templating. It is one of the few genuine ways to reduce the cost without reducing the specification, and it is worth asking any fabricator how they intend to use the offcut.
Nairobi specifics
Access decides how a large piece reaches your kitchen. An island top for a Karen or Runda house is frequently the largest single piece we make, and it needs a route in and enough people to carry it on edge.
We survey that before cutting. A slab carried flat rather than on edge will break under its own weight, and it breaks in the doorway rather than in the workshop.

What a worktop rate does not include
These are quoted separately and visibly rather than folded into a square-foot rate, because they are where two apparently similar quotations diverge.
- Sink and hob cutouts, and any drainer grooves
- Upstands and full-height splashbacks, priced by the running foot separately
- Mitred or built-up edge profiles, which double the material at the edge
- Removing and disposing of the existing worktop
- Making good where units are not level: tops are templated after levelling, not before
