The lift sets the piece size

Before we cut anything for a Westlands block we measure the service lift, car depth and door opening. About two and a half metres is typical, and that caps the longest piece we can deliver intact.

A house would take that run in one. Here it is seamed, and the skill is entirely in where the seam goes: never across a cutout, never at a narrow point, ideally aligned with a unit division so the eye reads it as deliberate.

One slab, several kitchens

An apartment worktop uses a fraction of a slab. Charged as a full slab, a small kitchen looks absurdly expensive; planned properly, the remainder becomes a vanity, a set of upstands, or the next flat in the same block.

We plan the cutting to use it. It is the single largest saving available on a small stone job and it is worth asking any fabricator how they intend to handle the offcut.

Cutouts are decided before the stone is

Newer blocks hand over with hob and sink positions already set, which means the cutouts are fixed before anyone chooses a material. That is usually fine, but it removes options, particularly on marble where a cutout close to an edge is a weak point.
