The hardest piece in the kitchen
An island top is unsupported on more sides than any other worktop in the house, and it is the one people ask to overhang for seating. Those two facts together are why island tops crack when perimeter runs of the same material never do.
Overhang has a limit, and it is shorter than you think
A stone top cantilevered past its cabinet is a beam. Beyond a certain projection it needs support, and the figure depends on the material and the thickness rather than on how it looks.
Granite and quartz at 20mm need support well before 300mm of overhang. At 30mm you get further. In every case the honest answer on a breakfast-bar overhang is either a bracket, a steel flat bar bedded into the cabinet, or a corbel, and anyone telling you a 400mm unsupported overhang is fine in 20mm quartz is going to be proved wrong by somebody leaning on it.
We specify the support with the top, and we would rather have that conversation at design stage than after a slab has been cut.
Seams on a long island
Islands are frequently longer than a single slab. Where a seam is unavoidable we place it where it is least visible and least stressed, which is usually not the middle and never across a cutout corner.
On a bookmatched or heavily veined stone the seam placement is a design decision as much as a technical one, and we lay it out on the actual slab with you rather than working from an offcut.
Templating happens after the cabinets
Not before, and not from the drawing. An island top is templated on the installed and levelled cabinets, because a millimetre of twist in the carcass becomes a visible gap under a rigid stone top. This adds a visit and removes most of what goes wrong.
